I upvoted this because it seems to be a good example for a case where the usual advice to define the function only for numeric variables (_?NumericQ) is not so good. By allowing symbolic arguments in the function to be minimized, you also allow FindMinimum to avoid taking numerical derivatives. At least that's how I approached the answer.
