About

Andrew Higgins has a B.S. in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign. His Master’s and Ph.D. degrees are from the University of Washington, Seattle, both in aeronautics and astronautics, where he worked on the original ram accelerator hypervelocity launcher facility. Since 1997, he has worked in the Shock Wave Physics Group of McGill University, Montreal, Canada, where he is currently an associate professor.

His research investigates the dynamics of detonation in gaseous, heterogeneous, and condensed-phase media, with applications to aerospace propulsion, hypervelocity launchers, material synthesis, and achieving extreme states of matter.

He also teaches undergraduate and graduate-level courses on gasdynamics, thermodynamics, and combustion.

Specialties:

  • Detonation in gaseous, heterogeneous, and condensed-phase energetic materials
  • Hypervelocity accelerators for laboratory impact studies, orbital debris simulation, and equation of state measurement
  • Shock waves, blast waves, and explosions. Supersonic reacting flow and aerospace propulsion
  • Unsteady gasdynamics
