# Solve[ ] doesn't work with transcendental equations

How to solve x^5-sinx=0 in mathematica? I try in this way: Solve[x^5 - Sin[x] == 0, x],but t doesn't work.

• It's a transcendental equation, so Mathematica won't be able to solve it. Try FindRoot instead (note that its syntax is somewhat different.) Commented Jun 18, 2015 at 20:35

• To close-voters: This can be solved, in a limited way, by Solve. (Nor IMO is it really clearly exemplified or explained in the documentation.) Try

Reduce[x^5 - Sin[x] == 0, x, Reals]


or if you want the two roots that are close to -1 and 1 you could do something like

Table[FindRoot[x^5 - Sin[x] == 0, {x, i}], {i, {-1, 1}}]
