(this sample is smaller than in the picture) My aim is to extrapolate the area corresponding to the orange points that don't overlap with the "green" region. Since the overlap is small my idea was to use a PDF for the orange points and the following is a contour plot obtained using

Now I would like to take a reasonable region of that plot corresponding to a probability say 95% (of course this region cannot be obtained uniquely). Is there a solution to find a suitable region of the xy plane corresponding to that probability?

I could simply plot the region for which PDF > "arbitrary value" but this value would depend upon the area itself (since the PDF is almost constant) and would not work well for other sets of data.

notes: I need the area in order to perform a 2D integral, so the region should be expressed as a condition for x and y. I might need the same thing for a 4D or 5D integration so I am looking for a method that could work in different dimensions as well.
