Note that $MachinePrecision is different from MachinePrecision. WorkingPrecision -> $MachinePrecision uses arbitrary precision with $MachinePrecision digits of precision, which may be what you wanted. One can use WorkingPrecision -> MachinePrecision, which is the default, for machine precision calculation, when desired.
