Typesetting - entering differentials?derivative in traditional form

I am trying to work out how iI enter a differential in standard notation  ? I am familiar with using D[] functionD, but ieverything I have tried everything to work out how to enter a differential has failed. The documentation says esc-dd-escEsc+d+d+Esc. If iWhen I enter esc-dd-esc andthat, I then ctrl /have to enter Ctrl+/ for the denominator then i need to enter esc-dd-escfollowed by Esc+d+d+Esc again followingfollowed by xx, assuming iI am differentiating w.r.t but. x. But that leaves me with the problem of how ito enter the function iI want to differentiate ?. Even using the math palettes iI cannot get this to work. Integrals etc are fine, but iI cannot figure out how to enter a derivative w.r.t. some variable.
