Clearly this is not a case where you can use the undocumented functionality. Thus, Graph[UndirectedEdge @@@ MeshCells[mesh, 1][[All, 1]], VertexCoordinates -> MapIndexed[First[#2] -> #1 &, MeshCoordinates[mesh]]] .
