Why is How do I efficiently navigate the command line interface to Mathematica so bad?

It is really bad. The left and right arrow keys do not move the cursor on the lineI would like to perfom such feats as cycling through previous commands, and the up arrow key does not get the last thing you enteredediting commands in place, etc. Instead they add mojibake into the command line that you have My expectation would be a readline-like interface, but this appears to delete. At leastnot be the backspace worksdefault.
