@kguler Originally the button adds a locator at the position which is the average of all the other locators, but I removed it since it wasn't relevant to the question. So no, there isn't really a reason :-)

I'm not sure it this is what you mean, but have you tried ListPlot[Mean[y[[;; #]]] & /@ Range[1000]]? It plots the average of the first n elements where n ranges from 1 to 1000. You can adjust the step size to give the average of the first 10, 20, 30 etc.. elements.
