I tried using Block[{$Output = ..., but this didn't seem to work for $Output.

comment Symbol created in unevaluated second argument of If
this is probably related to how just mentioning a symbol appears to add it to the symbol list. If you run a line with just blah, blah is added as a symbol. i don't know what the purpose of that is. maybe it's to make Options symbols (such as Automatic) show up in black instead of blue

comment Switching among view points in a Manipulate expression
@Kuba that zoom effect always happens when you drop out of an Infinity perspective, it's not related to the Dynamic. the lack of zoom does make rotating meaningless for that perspective though. i'm not quite sure how the whole thing would be properly fixed without adding more variables and stuff. @DavidCarraher, yea, the version with Dynamic is faster because the Manipulate doesn't re-evaluate its body, so the Pause isn't run.

comment The guidelines for options or multiple arguments?
A mechanism that I use sometimes, which isn't obvious, is to make the function all option-based: f[OptionsPattern[{a->1, b->2}] and then specify certain succinct forms: f[x_Real, rest___] := f[a->x, rest]. it's very convenient
