comment Strange NSum behavior for slightly larger number of terms
What is interesting is that even for a HUGE number of terms (I tried with 10^6), specifying the method gives the solution much faster than the default option.

Thank you. Using the WynnEpsilon method seems to do the trick. Apparently NSum, by default, changes the algorithm when some number of terms is reached and it seems that the heuristic that is used to determine this algorithm fails for some reason.

comment How to simplify to form without imaginary unit
Nevermind, I figured out your code. I still have to figure out how to repair the wrong result for certain arguments. It probably has something to do with choosing the wrong branch of arctan or something.

It seems to work... almost. When I plot the expression I get as a result it looks like it differs from the original expression for arguments $|y|,|x|<1$. I don't really understand what this does, though. I guess my Mathematica knowledge is lacking. What does @ and :> do?

Thanks for comments. I have tried using Assumptions in Fullsimplify, but it doesn't help. Thanks for solution, Hbar, I will check this myself and use it. However, I have also another (much longer) expression that I would also like to get in an explicitly real form so still I would like to see how to produce this with Mathematica.

After some difficulties, I managed to switch to Nouveau drivers (it seems that to one needs to remove the nvidia drivers completely by --purge, otherwise Nouveau drivers won't work). This solved the problem. Thank you!

For some reason I get no picture to the monitor if I do this. Thanks for suggestion, though.

This was the list of files accessed after 26.11. I have a bad habit of not upgrading my system too often :). The same list appears if I go to software center and look at Tuesday's update history.
