comment Could a package be composed of references?
@HpR I don't think so, as practically all these package files count as one package: they inject their symbols in the same myPackage context and that is the only thing that matters for Mathematica when it calls the package with Needs.

@Sjoerd Yes, I should have stated that I had zilch exposure to GUIkit, so I was just guessing that zohdi is experimenting with it for some similar reasons I sketched. It is all so confusing and speculative at this point that I should be silently withdrawn to my embroidery...

Does your problem of setting the DataRange for ListPlot have anything to do with ExcelLink? If no, please modify your question and title accordingly.

@Sjoerd It is still not easy to do huge Excel-like dynamic tables with row/column selection and alike directly in Mathematica. If you use Dynamic, it will be slow, if you use TableForm, it will crash the kernel. Of course for small-scale projects I agree on preferring Dynamic.

comment Could a package be composed of references?
@HpR I don't think there is any drawback, sometimes it is more convenient to include the usage next to the functions, especially during development, to easily update usage when the function signature changes.

comment Showing a forest with root of the trees on the top
@Szabolcs Furthermore (or "something completely different"): Graph[{1, 2, 3}, {1 -> 2, 2 -> 3}, DirectedEdges -> True, GraphLayout -> "LayeredDigraphEmbedding"] draws an undirected graph. So I guess LayeredDigraphEmbedding is only reliable in the simplest cases.
