comment Custom function not returning any output
When I execute it in a fresh Mathematica kernel, I do get some output (a very large polynomial) and some error messages like (Thread::tdlen: Objects of unequal length in {0} {0,2} cannot be combined. >>). Have you tried this in a fresh kernel? Also, you are not localizing tmpSet. Try wrapping your function with Module. Also, try Fold instead of Do and Return.

@ndroock1 I don't understand what you are trying to get - do you want a single copy of the picture, centered on that coordinate? In that case, you need Inset. I can do up another answer if that's what you wanted.

Yes, but I realised that isn't the issue - one actually has to rescale the points for the AxisOrigin: {Log@Length@test, -Max[test]}} in this case. Given that, it will probably be easier for me to just catch the value of the option and change the head of the plotting function to ListLogPlot or ListLogLogPlot depending on its value. The tick labels inside the plot area would also have to be fixed.

@Mr.Wizard I agree yours was neater, but in the context of the actual application, this approach worked better with what I already had. The total package is about 120kb and there were things I didn't want to mess too much with. The real version also has footnotes, source notes, titles and subtitles, and pulls the title and subtitle for each subgraph and moves it inside the plot are as Inset text in the Prolog option. Huge amounts of complexity. I also had to allow for the fact that, if my version is ever used by others in my firm, they have to be able to follow it.

@Jens that's very clever, thank, but unfortunately only it works if you only have one series. In my actual application, I have a set of custom functions to plot various kinds of plots with highly customised settings, so that they fit nicely in my multipanel graphs

@R.M quite right, and on my tests, mapping it (/@) is an order of magnitude slower than just using the function (@) or IntegerChop[data].

@kalewallace - a good thing to know about Mathematica is that if you are using a For loop, you are probably doing it wrong. Get to know Nest, Fold and MapThread - you will be glad you did.
