comment How can I draw the Olympic rings with Mathematica?
This is a 3D solution - it just looks 2D ;-)

It is: I am just thinking of my userbase here.

This is much better than my attempt. I forgot about the third argument to Circle.

Subscripts don't work in any filename system I know of, so I think that will cause problems.

Can you define "optimal"? Also, are the data available anywhere?

(2) and (3) are separate questions from this one - please post them as another question(s). You'll need to Transpose your data if you have imported it as described in this question so why not just Import it normally as data = Rest@Import["myfile.xls",{"Sheets","Data"}]?

comment How to find pixel position in a graph , given two points?
Hello @hay, welcome to Mathematica.SE! I fixed up your missing parenthesis and tweaked some formatting. However, you have both p1 and P1 in your answer. Mathematica is case-sensitive. Do you mean for them to be the same?

Finally got around to testing this. I think it's the vagaries of the EMF coordinate rounding that cause it to happen. Your solution #1 works on the cropping (but not the linespacing), but you don't need to specify the Pane width. Labeled isn't really an option because I want to allow users to use the PlotLabel option for unusual graph types that aren't covered by my custom plotting functions.

comment ImagePadding or other means of getting whitespace when the PlotLabel is a Column or Grid
@Mr.Wizard it is surprising - but it turns out that my custom plot in my real application already had ImageMargins set and it wasn't helping. The whitespace was there, and the text was cropping at the edge of the image adjoining that image margin.

This got me on the way to a solution, but using Graphics and AspectRatio requires too much knowledge about the dimensions of the title for my purposes.

comment Can I stop edges in graphs from drawing on top of the vertices?
@belisarius yeah, +1 for the smilies and the solution. I probably should have specified that we have a HighlightGraph in there. My colleague is actually doing this and he is a new Mathematica user, so anything that allows us to keep it as a Graph rather than a GraphPlot, at least up to final rendering, is preferable in our specific application.

Really nice solution, thanks! I accepted @Szabolcs' because it was sufficient for our purposes.

@belisarius - it's a different problem.

This is a similar solution but the problem is actually different.

You might find your code marginally less unwieldy if you type circ[[2,1]] instead of circ[[2]][[1]].

In principles you could use Map to wrap ToString around the expressions at each side of each rule, but if you take the quote marks off, Mathematica interprets "C1.4.4" as C1 * 0.4 * 0.4, i.e. 0.16 C1. There should be some version of HoldForm that works but it seems almost impossible to define a function that performs the transformation without releasing Hold somewhere along the line.
