comment An equivalent to Condition that I can use anonymously when string pattern matching
be sure to consider Mr.Wizard's important point about (in)efficiency and the number of forms this kind of approach implicitly checks: mathematica.stackexchange.com/questions/89160/…

Programmatically you could substitute in Unique: StringMatchQ[#, StringExpression @@ With[{each = p__ /; endsWithSpaceQ@p}, Table[each /. p -> Unique[], {2}]] ~~ "17"] & /@ {str1, str2}

Hi @LeonidShifrin, how do you do know that mx is cross-platform now? You've tried it and it works? Or is there something somewhere in the docs? The help details on DumpSave still says: "Files written by DumpSave can only be read on the same type of computer system on which they were written." and the help on .MX says: "MX files cannot be exchanged between different operating systems or versions of the Wolfram System."

comment Colored marks appearing in notebook input text?
This happens to me primarily when working with Cloud functions. Saving and reloading is a workaround.

Yes, I use that of course, thank you. Just left it out of the question for brevity, probably too much brevity. :) Thanks again.

Both your and Michael's solutions are perfect. I particularly like how this one requires fewer edits to the example code, and the self-TrackedSymbols trick is an interesting one to know for the future. Thanks!

I don't know DynamicWrapper very well but it seems to essentially refresh every second? For example running counter = 0; Button[DynamicWrapper["hi", counter++], Print@counter] and pressing the button gives large numbers.
