@jens "nothing" is a bit strong given that you enter subscripts using ctrl-underscore. OP's "looks like this" may actually be referring to that.

Try this with something other than a uniform distribution, e.g. cf = Compile[{{n, _Integer}}, RandomVariate[ChiSquareDistribution[5]]] and you see it calls back to Mathematica,

Just copy the Mathematica text (copy as input text from the Edit menu) or convert the cell to InputForm and copy, then paste it here. Try to edit it as good as possible using the Markdown tools and some community member here with the right tools will do the Greek symbols for you.

What I sometimes do is generate a huge block of random number in Mathematica and send this (as a block) to a compiled Mathematica routine. This is quite often much faster than generating the random numbers one by one in the compiled routine.
