comment Reading csv/xlsx data into Mathematica with column headings as list names
@TaliesinBeynon We use Excel files (.XLSX) to import data as well as export data. It provides us with a simple interface that can be understood and used by most people. Giving columns distinct, complete and reasonable names means the order of the columns does not matter and provides a named rather than a numbered access to the data. In this sense Association and Dataset provide serious progress within Mathematica. In a further step, we also named all rows, which means each cell is identified by pairs of names. Please do not forget that Excel sheets are regularly sorted.

An alternative way to create a Dataset is irisDataset = Dataset[Inner[Rule, header, Transpose[data], Association]].

comment How to get grid lines at all (log) tick marks in Version 10?
@Mr.Wizard Thank you very much for the hint. It actually works inside Plot. I managed to crash the kernel with some combinations but "Reverse" worked too.

Of course I agree. I am in fact very unhappy with the various Log???Plot functions. In my opinion there should be a single Plot (and a single Plot3D) function, which is supplemented by ScalingFunction->{"Lin", "Log"} or something very similar.

comment Defining and evaluating new continuous distributions based on Mathematica's distributions
Thank you very much that was exactly what I was looking for. The collection guide/DerivedDistributions summarizes a number of other functions I was looking for.

comment Why is parallel slower?
You should try a very large data set. Every now and then the overhead in setting up a parallelization outweighs the effect of parallel processing. Using multiple CPUs is a relatively simple exercise. The situation will become worse when you use GPUs. The data transfer CPU->GPU->CPU is the critical part.

comment Functions, Options and Symbols
@ J.M. PlotRange is definitely dcumented only as an option. How did you figure this one out? It is also not a general means for retrieving Options values. Very nice.
