Take a look at FullForms of your results. Moreover, if you apply f to List[2] it will become f[2] so examples with Part/Times/Power are just specific coincidences for those functions acting on one argument. p.s. First @ {1} or #& @@ {1} is the way to go.

I don't understand your 3rd comment. P.s. do not modify dChange code, better keep it more general and use something like: $Assumptions = {t \[Element] Reals}; dChange[D[f[x], {x, 2}] - f[x] == 0, x == Exp[t], x, t, f[x]] /. C[1] -> 0
