Consider Total[y1/(4*x1) + (1 - y1)/(4*x2) - weights y1/(widths + x1) - (1 - y1)/(widths + x2)] to exploit listability.

zip() is effectively the same as Transpose[], but your problem looks as if it will be better served by MapThread[] + Total[].

The "golden ratio" scaling is for Plot[]/ListPlot[]. ParametricPlot3D[] has the BoxRatios -> Automatic setting by default.

I think it's safe to say that I have some experience with using ParametricPlot3D[], considering that I was already using it back when it was a function that had to be loaded through a package. And yes, you are not the first special snowflake to be sideswiped by Mathematica trying to guess the "best features" of your plot and then clipping the plot range accordingly.
