comment What is the average of rolling two dice and only taking the value of the higher dice roll?
@vonjd: Max[a,b] normally remains unevaluated for distributions, but in your method Max[a,a] simplifies to a, regardless of whether a is a number. Effectively, you're taking the mean of one die roll. In this answer, x and y have the same distribution, but are different objects.

comment Proper treatment of roots and powers in Series?
Not a full-fledged answer, Mathematica's behaviour still puzzles me, but something that may point you in the right direction: you do get the expected result if you assume r>0 && p>0. The assumption r<0 && p>0 works too, but (r<0 || r>0) && p>0 does not...

comment Vector Analysis: Why are the Grad, Laplacian and Div being evaluated to zero
Interesting. The VectorAnalysis reference reads: "The initial default coordinate system is Cartesian, with coordinate variables Xx, Yy, and Zz." What does your Coordinates[] initially give?

You don't need to. Div[{Xx,Yy,Zz}] will work without changing the coordinate system.
