Okay, maybe someone can give some real insight into this at some point. At the very least, this will serve as a future reference. Maybe a post with some experiments and comparison between different functions and patterns, including what you said about the nature of such fundamental functions, will be enough to have this answered.

I somehow thought it was interesting to find out where this point, to which they can be modified is, no matter if this is useful or not. But now I'm thinking of deleting the question. The fundamental difference between how Plus works for numbers and symbols was just something that seemed strange to me.

Have you read the question? I'm not interested in workarounds or whether or not it's a good idea to do this (of course it isn't!). I thought mabye someone could explain to me what happens so I get a better understanding of what Mma does.

comment How can automatic ticks be made “outie”?
As I already experienced in this question and @halirutan pointed out to me in chat, there seems to be a bug in AbsoluteOptions that causes the additional ticks. I doubt that there is an easy way to fix this issue.

comment Fitting parameters of user defined function returning discrete values
Try Minimize[{Plus @@ Norm /@ (testFunction[a, b] - testData), a < 0}, {a, b}], with the opening { before Plus. Otherwise you apply plus to your constraint as well. Also notice the warning message, since there is no real minimum for that particular constraint.

comment What are the most common pitfalls awaiting new users?
The OP asked for things that tend to confuse new users and this certainly confused me. But I totally see your point. (except for the fact that the post about the documentation above e.g. seems more like a guide, too) maybe we can tweak my answer to make it better meet the purpose of this wiki.
