Works for me (i.e. Ilm!=0, which is what you want if I understand correctly), both in the notebook interface and when I run it from the command line. Obviously this has nothing to do with TimeConstrained, but with the rest of your code. I suggest you clean up your post and reformulate your question. Also you should give more information on how you actually run this such that it fails!

Is there any way to integrate this with Manipulate (or something similar) to change the parameters of the plotted function? That would be a very handy addition and would make it fully interactive.

That's very interesting to know! I didn't even know Resolve existed. But is there also a way to simplify Abs[...]? Of course I could do a replacement and apply your trick (or ssch's) but that's not very elegant.

Keep in mind that ReplaceAll is not a mathematical operation, but just pure term replacement. To see the difference try Limit[ArcTan[(b^2-r^2+x^2)/Sqrt[-b^4-(r^2-x^2)^2+2b^2(r^2+x^2)]],r->x-b] and Simplify[(b^2-r^2+x^2)/Sqrt[-b^4-(r^2-x^2)^2+2b^2(r^2+x^2)]]/.r->x-b] (where the argument is the term pointed out by @SjoerdC.deVries below). I think (but haven't tried) that by taking the limit you will be able to evaluate the resulting expression. However, the approaches outlined by Simon Woods and b.gatessucks below are most probably better.

belisarius, I don't understand your point. Just replacing Minimize with FindMinimum in your code also works and results in a speed-up of at least a factor of 10.

I can't think of a way of doing this atm, but you might consider changing the title of your post to attract more attention. As I see it, the problem boils down to solving a system of equations with a indeterminate number of variables.

If I understand correctly you want to load your source files into the Mathematica session automatically (as if using Get in the notebook), right? This is controlled by the "Notebook Properties" and "Source Properties" settings, which you can access from the context menu entry "Properties" (at least it works this way with eclipse+workbench plugin)
