Thanks! I was actually looking for interactive commands (though I did not make that very clear in my original post). Your answer, however, gave me enough to search with. I found what I was looking for (namely, Ctrl + {) under Cell > Grouping.

@rm-rf: Maybe I'm not interpreting what I'm seeing correctly, but if I run TreeForm[x+y], and then run FullForm[%], what I get is Plus[x, y], and not Graphics[...]. This suggests that TreeForm does not really produce a Graphics object, but is merely a display directive... Again, I may not be interpreting what I'm seeing correctly...

@Hector: this post is definitely motivated by the same situation as the one you link to, but it is not a duplicate. Here I'm asking about displaying techniques. For all I know, there exists a black-box Mathematica function that would be a perfect answer to this question, without shedding any direct light on the question in that other post.

@Kuba: thanks for your comments. I can't follow your last point. Just to be clear, if A, B, C, D are all of some type X for which addition is defined, I'm saying that A + {B, C, D} should evaluate to {A + B, A + C, A + D}. If X happens to be "List of 2 integers", then the foregoing implies that {1, 2} + {{5, 9}, {9, 7}, {1, 7}} would evaluate to {{1, 2} + {5, 9}, {1, 2} + {9, 7}, {1, 2} + {1, 7}} = {{6, 11}, {10, 9}, {2, 9}}.
