comment Is it possible to define new PlotTheme?
@rcollyer Is this something that will become "fleshed out" in v11 or sooner/later?

comment How to change the default ColorData used in Mathematica's Plot?
@Mr.Wizard: Does this still work in v9? Overriding the Plot function(s) doesn't seem to work for me (the default behaviour is not modified).

@rcollyer You're quite right! I should've read the documentation more carefully. If you post it as an answer, I'll accept it :-)

I've updated my example to make it less ambiguous. The tick specification works with Plot (and ListPlot, and all their variants), but not with Histogram.

@ssch Thanks, but this was just an illustration that it's not working as I expected it to. I do actually want to provide my own ticks!

Thanks – this more-or-less fixes the issue! Without the opacity in the edges, I can pass the PDFs through GhostScript without rasterising them. I still get problems if I try to plot more than one dataset, but I guess I'll just have to find a way of doing it without GhostScript.

@cormullion You're quite right. I now think converting to PostScript is entirely the wrong thing to do. All I really want is to convert the text into vector shapes, so that the fonts don't cause problems.
