@Mr.Wizard thanks. The reason I wanted this as a function is because I will wind up using it on lots of different lists for lots of different columns. I'm guess the function form is better for that.

Also, can you please make your code into a function. I would like to learn how to do that. Why does nff[num_numba, l_list] := Nearest[Map[Rule[#[[1]], #] &, l]][num][[1]] and nuff[b, list] produce garbage?

@GeorgeWolfe The Why is critical to this whole enterprise. Someone with a strong Statistics, Econometrics and programming background will not go very far if they don't understand the Finance and Economics behind the models. Your road-map is absolutely essential to keep OP's project from being DOA. Presumably some of those MMA for Fin-engineering books will provide some of this perspective but I am not optimistic about the quality.
