I am a Ph.D. student in Operations Research at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I am an avid user of C++, Mathematica, and LaTeX. I benefit a great deal from answers on the Stack Exchange network, and I hope to contribute as much as I can to the growth of this great community.

comment Using the Mathematica front-end efficiently for editing notebooks
I find on a Windows system that the Emacs shortcuts will not work because of the conflict with traditional key bindings, such as C-p being the print command.

comment Automating Esc [[ Esc formatting?
On my Windows 7 (64 bit) computer using Mathematica 9.0.0.0, I did not need to replace Command with Alt. The code works as written without modification.

After doing further research, I confirmed that (at least for my windows version) you are correct. I changed the registry key on my work computer and the fixed worked. I am still trying to get it to work on my laptop, which I assume is giving me trouble due to a different version of Windows (7 versus Vista).

All the answers have been very helpful. Most of what has been said, I had read once before, but I was stumped because I was still getting unexpected behavior. It turns out that the problem I had was actually caused by a HoldForm that was buried inside the complicated expression on the right-hand-side of a, from where I misused one of my own functions.

That's an interesting tactic. Do you think ReleaseHold would work? My Mathematica 8 help tells me that Release was superseded by Evaluate and ReleaseHold.

comment What is the default file path used by the Put function and how do I pre-evaluate an expression to use in Put?
I agree with you that your answer is probably better Mathematica style. It certainly produces a slightly more robust approach for the specific issue I was considering when I wrote the original question. I also think your mention about the built in variables and functions for handling directory names is more robust.
