The second solution works alright for me. Version 8.0.4 Home Edition :-) under Windows 7 Home Premium.

comment How to avoid restart during development?
@NoEscape - The kernel will execute the input line left to right, so when it encounters Exit[], the kernel is killed, and then all other instructions from that input are lost. Same with the .m file. When you kill the kernel all you have left is the user interface, no execution of any kind. You could have the <<MyPackage on a separate input line. That input will be retained, but not automatically executed. So after you executed the Exit[] command, just select that line and press Shift+Enter

comment How to import date (YYYY-MM-DD) data from a file?
Kudos for using the ISO 8601 standard date format. The Fred Flintstone Format (MM/DD/YY) should be banned! :-)

@Amatya - You can accept it if you're convinced this can't be outdone. But in my experience questions with an accepted answer get fewer new answers, so I would wait a couple of days. In any case, if you wish to accept now, you can always change your mind later.

@rcollyer - On EE.SE there's only 1 (125 upvotes). And don't forget OP's two gold badges: great question and famous question in a couple of hours! (40k views in 13 hours, on EE.SE it usually takes a couple of years to get 10k)
