comment Package for symbolic computation of christoffel symbols and parallel transports in Riemannian geometry, given the metric
Yes you need to install mathematica. It is not free, but there are several licence options. All equally powerful...very powerful.

Please read my answer below. I am not familiar with using diff. Geometry with medical data. Would you perhaps briefly explain what these large data matrices represent and what kind of manifolds you want to detect/describe with Christoffels/ curvature

comment Keyboard icon under windows
@LiamWilliam I am looking preferably for a replacement character (if it exists) in Windows. If it does not exists, then an image/icon created/obtained by other means would be ok

comment Mathematica and System Modeler licensing per year or forever?
@TylerDurden You do ot have to feel "stuck" with MMA 9. Sooner or later you will move to Win 7 or 8 and then you can upgrade to MMA 10 or later. Please note that the upgrade for Home ed. costs much less than a new MMA 10 Home ed. So you lose nothing by waiting a bit, till you upgrade you operating system or PC.

comment How to add an entirely new menu
Thank you David, this was known, but the real point is: can we do this programmatically? Can a user-package do this and then perhaps programmatically restart the fron-end so that the new Menu takes effect? You can see from my comment above in Degnen's answer and in the question text that the real challenge lies in doing this programmatically.

comment How to customize the MathematicaClosingDialog.nb?
@m_goldberg I do not think this dialog exists under OS X, because it depends on the fact that under Windows MMA 10 has a menu bar in each notebook window. So if you close the last nb, you are given the choice -in Preferences- to either quit MMA for good or open the ClosingDialog (with another menu bar). Under OS X I understand that MMA 10 still has a global menu bar, so this issue does not arise.

comment Menu commands on Palettes and other windows without menu bars?
This question has not been resolved after more than a month. It seems to me that it deserves to be tagged as bug, at least in windows. Don't you agree?

PatoCriollo: the GeneralUtilities package does not seem to be documented in V. 10. Could you please describe what is it used for and how you found it?
