comment Why round to even integers?
I've often thought Mathematica should have an option, e.g. Direction $\rightarrow$ {"HalfDown","HalfUp","HalfEven","HalfOdd","Stochastic"} etc.

Well, this works, but I do not regard it as a step forward. Directly querying the contents of curated data is a pretty opaque (and sparsely documented) way of going about things. I guess it answers the question, though.

Thanks for that. The regex coach utility is going in my validation toolkit.

Thanks, Silvia. The first one using Except with RepeatedNull is what I was looking for. Except takes a list so Except[{"a","e","i","o","u"}]... means anything but vowels, for example.

Thanks, Szabolcs, and everyone who answered. As ever, more than one way to skin a cat with Mathematica. I'm a bit surprised that there isn't a StringPartition function taking the same arguments as Partition as a built-in, analogous to StringTake vs. Take.
