comment How to mesh a region using adaptive cubic elements
@Kay, the problem of the approach you asked for is that it might be more computationally expensive, a problem of the NP Hard type. The approach explored is simple, fast and addresses what I assume is your final goal,(reducing the number of finite elements).

comment How to mesh a region using adaptive cubic elements
The transparent cubewires were used to help out during the coding to ensure that everything is working fine. Those are the cuboids that will be exploded next, if you process the dataset an additional time.

Kay, you can start the process with larger cube, say radius 4 or 2 and take it from there

comment Reading a .txt file with numbers
@mencia if you look at the answer that I updated with 2012rcampion feedback you can see that there is a ToExpression command which makes it a complex number. Check with Head[#]&/@data which returns {Complex, Complex, Complex, Complex, Complex, Complex}

@nikie loved the method used to make the road system stand out. Do you have any recommendation on literature to read to learn the tricks available in the discipline of image processing?

@Nikie, this is what I wanted to achieve. Thx. I'll be checking the code a wee bit later. Any recommendation for changing the title to something more meaningful?

If you look at the code you'll see it is reading separated files.(the first section of code creates separated files to use in the answer as no actual data has been provided.
