I'm trying to inverse this equation

Z = X + X^2 / 2

but couldn't wrap up my head around it. If anyone can provide a step by step solution to this it will be really helpful.

Do you mean solve for X as a function of Z? Perhaps try the aptly named Solve function. There are step-by-step examples in the documentation. –  Ian Mar 18 at 13:37

Use Solve or Reduce for this task

Reduce[z == x + x^2/2, x]
(* x == -1 - Sqrt[1 + 2 z] || x == -1 + Sqrt[1 + 2 z] *)

Solve[z == x + x^2/2, x]
(* {{x -> -1 - Sqrt[1 + 2 z]}, {x -> -1 + Sqrt[1 + 2 z]}} *)
