How do I quickly visualize an image with a large number of pixels?

I've noticed a significant slowdown when I attempt to visualize or look at pixel colors / coordinates for images with a large number of pixels (say 10,000 x 10,000) regardless of image format or overall file size.

Is this a common problem, and are there ways around it?

Hi Terry. I don't really understand this question. Are you asking why large images take longer to load into Mathematica? Or why big images in notebooks slow down scrolling and saving? Or how to see smaller versions of already loaded images? Are you asking about file-based image processing using ImageFileApply? Perhaps some more concrete info... –  cormullion Aug 8 at 13:30
