I'm experiencing delays and lag with respect to the cursor. Even on a fresh notebook just after launching Mathematica as soon as I start typing the cursor falls behind the key strokes very quickly. I.e. By the time I am ten letters in the cursor is only on the fifth. ( I don't type amazingly fast....) The cursor always catches up and never drops text. If I click into a new cell or highlight earlier code for copy-and-pasting there can be a delay of several seconds sometimes.

It is an awkward problem to describe and I can't give an explicit example. The problem just appeared one day a few months ago and I've had enough of it now. This lag isn't present in any other programs which may be running simultaneously which makes me believe its a setting somewhere. The execution times of cells doesn't appeared to have slowed down.

I'm running Mathematica 8.0.4.0 on XP. I saw this related question but didn't take much from it.

Is the cursor refresh rate set anywhere in Mathematica or has anyone come across this strange behaviour before?

Do you have Intel graphics? There is some problem with respect to cursor performance in the newer versions of their driver. I had to roll back to version 15.22.54.64.2622 (2012/01/20) to fix this. – Oleksandr R. Nov 20 '12 at 16:23
I do actually. In particular running dxdiag tells me I have Chip Type: Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family - Q45/Q43. Do you have a link with more information on that issue please? My driver is dated the 18/8/2010. Not sure if I want to update it as everything else is working well at the moment. Thanks for the feedback. – fizzics Nov 20 '12 at 16:59
Unfortunately, I didn't find any useful information on the issue so I can't offer you any links. Since your chip is different to mine and you're using a rather old driver, I suspect your issue is not the same as the one I encountered, so I'm out of suggestions, sorry. (You might try updating the driver anyway, but it may or may not help.) – Oleksandr R. Nov 20 '12 at 17:40
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll post back here for completeness if I make any head way on the problem. I might just have to put up with it though! Its not a big deal. Thanks again. – fizzics Nov 21 '12 at 10:38
Since several days have passed without anyone else reporting this problem (when I experienced similar I had actually noticed it in MS Word, not Mathematica) and it's hard to say what causes it, I think it's probably best if I vote to close as TL because I don't think this is going to be answerable as it stands. If you solve the problem we can always reopen later. – Oleksandr R. Nov 24 '12 at 20:45
